Day 1

It’s been a successful first day here at this year’s Georgia Wing Encampment. There were no injuries and all of the new arrivals have had their hungers satisfied with their first meals here at Fort Stewart. The cadets have been handed high expectations by our staff but these have only motivated them. They have begun a long trip to a new destination some have never seen before. By the time they reach this destination, cadets will be taught a new level of discipline but will also be given opportunities to match the amount of work they procure. All of the cadets here have set personal goals today, whether it be winning individual cadet of the day awards, or being a member of the honor flight of the day... Read More

Day 2

All cadets started out day 2 with a 1-hour PT session at 6 a.m. The PT included a test of push-ups, sit-ups, Sit and Reach, and the mile run. After that cadets were well fed with a big breakfast.  Each flight then worked on formation drill.  Religious services were offered by the base chapel and the encampment Moral Leadership Officer. For lunch, the cadets consumed MREs (Meals Ready to Eat), and most of the cadets seem to enjoy the MREs quite a bit. Classes were held in the afternoon on radio-controlled flight and Ultimate Frisbee; unfortunately, the flights that were scheduled late in the afternoon were scrubbed due to winds that were out-of-limits for the small aircraft. Later on this week the cadets will use these instructions to compete against others in a radio-controlled “fly off” to see who is the best R/C pilot.  Several of the flights had their pictures taken in their blue uniforms, but rain...Read More

Day 3

The cadets had another productive day here at Fort Stewart. At the start of the day, half of the cadets attended courses taught by U.S. Air Force Reserve instructors while the others were taken to Hunter Army Airfield.  At Hunter, the cadets were allowed to use state of the art simulators, as well as learn about the missions of the United States Coast Guard. They were then taken on a tour to view the HH-65C helicopters. After dinner, three cadets were given the opportunity to fly the largest of our R/C planes while everyone else got a chance to watch. To end the day, all cadets showered and were sent to bed to sleep off a day of hard work...Read More

Day 4

Today the cadets had another chance to use more state of the art simulators. They drove and shot in the M-1 Abrams and the M-2 Bradleys as well as a Humvee.  Cadets were taught the details of the entire cadet program, including National Cadet Special Activities, which they qualifiy for upon completion of their encampment requirement.  Character Development was also conducted with the lesson being "My Word, My Bond".  The evening provided time for more Ultimate Frisbee and R/C flying.                 Newsletter - Day 4 (PDF)

Day 5

Today, cadets were given an extremely rare opportunity. Cadets witnessed the U.S. Army change of command for the Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion 41st Field Artillery Regiment. The Military Police were also generous enough to treat us to a demonstration using their trained dogs. They showed us how the dogs are trained and staged scenarios in which the trained canines are used. After this, a ride on CH- 47 Chinooks was scheduled but was unfortunately cancelled. Luckily, it has been rescheduled for tomorrow, and the classes that were scheduled for tomorrow were moved to today. So all in all, it was another successful day. We will take numerous pictures of the Chinook rides for parents to view.

Day 6

Today the cadets had two events that blew their minds. First they toured the Wright Army Air Field. They climb the control tower and saw the “big picture” of the airfield, after which they went to see the MQ-5B Hunter Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. They had a chance to ask the manager of maintenance questions about the MQ-5B. After they went to the hanger they went out to the runway and saw the MQ-5B fly. They then proceeded to the airfield fire department. They saw all the latest in airplane fire technology and had a chance to talk first hand with the men who man the station.  They then went to the civilian terminal and saw the inner workings of airfield management as well as learning a little bit of history about the airfield.  After lunch they went to the Donovan Parade Field and were picked up for a ride in a CH-47 Chinook...Read More

Day 7

Well the encampment is beginning to wind down, but there was still plenty to do today.  The two squadrons of cadets took turns touring the Fort Stewart museum.  They then swapped places and took an end of encampment examination.  When the testing and the show-and-tell was over, they snuck in a little time to prepare for breakdown tomorrow.  The evening was capped off by a very "special" dining event...but we'll let the cadets tell you about the details when they get home.
